Neak Sophal was born in 1989 in Takeo province, Cambodia. She graduated from Graphic Design at Royal University of Fine Arts. Her works focuses on social issues and specificities of the Cambodian culture, stories, memories and fear through composed portraiture in collaboration with her subjects. she makes question of identity behind each character that is perform the Cambodian who still very afraid of inside because of the culture or the wars.
Neak sophal has been involved in workshops, festival, solo and group exhibitions locally and internationally. Her selected solo exhibition include Inspiring Destiny, For Arts’ Sake, Siem Reap, Cambodia; Flower, Java Art Gallery, Phnom Penh, Cambodia (2017); Nek Na?, Les Douche La Galerie, Paris, France (2016); Leaf, Romeet Gallery, Phnom Penh, Cambodia (2013). Her selected group exhibition include La Photographie au Cambodge, La Filature.Mulhouse, France (2019); Landskrona Photo Festival, Sweden (2018); Cambodia: Looking Back on the Future, The Flinn Gallery, New York City, USA (2017); Histories of Future, National Museum, Phnom Penh, Cambodia (2016); Bangkok Photo Festival, BACC, Bangkok, Thailand; Jorng Jam II, Logan Art Gallery, Queensland, Australia (2015); Hong Kong International Photo Festival, Hong Kong (2014); and Angkor Photo Festival, Siem Reap, Cambodia (2013).
Neak Sophal was an artist in residency at Lang Art Dorm, Hue City, Vietnam (2018); at S-AIR, Sapporo, Japan (2016); at Brisbane, Australia (2015). She won 1st prize of Angkor Photo Workshop, Siem Reap, Cambodia (2013); and she was selected for SurVivArt program, Berlin, Germany, (2011).
