Homage to Kumagusu Minakata, 2014, paper, watercolor, sumi ink, citrus juice
All images courtesy of the artist
This work was inspired by the watercolour illustrations of fungi drawn by Minakata Kumagusu, and was drawn on paper that had been soaked in mandarin orange juice and then scorched to give it an old texture, but it is as if the many of Kumagusu's lost illustrations of fungi have begun to spin a new story in the hands of the artist.
This work was used as the original illustration for the cover of the English, Japanese and Dutch editions of the book ‘Matsutake’ by the anthropologist Anna Tsing.
