SAC Gallery is holding the third solo exhibition of internationally renowned figure in the field of ceramics and award-winning ceramic artist Vipoo Srivilasa, titled “Eleganza Extravaganza Cats”.
Srivilasa's artistic persona is defined by its positivity, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal. Yet, the characters he draws inspiration from, often rooted in Thai folklore and literature, carry profound messages that resonate with the struggles and triumphs of the queer community.
The nine ceramic sculptures in "Eleganza Extravaganza Cats" embody this duality. Inspired by the character of "Nang Maew" from the Thai folk opera* "Chaiyachet", Srivilasa's childhood encounter with drag culture finds expression in these vibrant feline figures. Adorned in elaborate costumes, these cats embody the flamboyant and unconventional beauty of drag queens, celebrating the freedom and self-expression of queer identity.
Melbourne-based, Thai-born Australian artist Vipoo Srivilasa creates artwork that is positive, accessible, and beautiful. His practice primarily focuses on ceramics, though he also produces works on paper, mixed-media sculptures, bronze statues, and large-scale public art installations. He often incorporates food and interactive performance into his ceramic projects, creating a unique and immersive experience for viewers.
