Art is the reflection of one’s imagination and ideas. It is a form of expression that has the ability to commemorate a culture, a person, or a belief. Throughout time, many artists have used their work to influence the communication about political, spiritual, and philosophical topics. Currently, in Laos artist have been confined within their comfort zones, with no support in venturing into other styles of art. Therefore, Mekong Art Initiative or MAI was founded in 2018 with an intend to break the barriers restraining local Lao artist from reaching the domestic and international audience. In addition, our initiative is to help expose the whole Lao culture to a new world through the introduction of new art styles.
The first project of MAI was hosted Lao Art Season 2018 which presented 8 exhibitions and workshops featuring the wonderful diversity of contemporary art including paintings, sculptures, installations, video, and performance art. In 2019 we organized several exhibitions and workshop through out the years locally and in neighboring countries. In 2020, one of our talk of the town exhibition was the photo exhibition namely ‘6+9 = 8 beyond Infinitive’ where many young photographers have been inspired to go beyond their limited and encourage them to open their heart to different ways of express ideas.
After above successful stories we would like to continued open the platform for young art lovers in Laos to endure their passion. Therefore, we would like to developing new project call ‘Self Portraiture – Reveal Your AI’ which will be held at Mandala Boutiques Hotel. The aim of this project is to encourage the young generation to find out their own identity and persuade their passionate on arts. This fun-filled expo will feature panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, music, fashion show;
The program will start with the cooperation series photo workshop with LAB DE LINES on every weekend started from 14 – 28 November 2020 by leading photographers in Laos; then the exhibition and expo program will start from 11 – 13 of December 2020. The exhibition will present the artworks (Photos, paintings, VDO Arts, Installations...) by the invited artists and some selections artists from the workshops. The exhibition will start from 11- 13 December 2020. Some of the artworks will be remain showing until the end of the years. Specially, this year MAI honor to cooperate with Fang Mea Khong 2020 – the International Dance Festival to organize the ‘Photodanse’ – the cooperate project between dancer and photographer which will showcase on 12/12/2020 at the Mandala Boutique Hotel. In addition we have parallel pop up shop expo will also take place the same date of the exhibition which will show case the young designer group and other crafted product by young generation.
