ディン・クァン・レー 戦火を乗り越え再びベトナムから

織物の写真による作品や、インスタレーション、ビデオ、彫刻などのコンテンポラリーアート作品を数多く発表しているディン・クァン・レーは、ベトナムのカンボジアとの国境に近い町で生まれ、幼少の頃に起こったカンボジアとの紛争を逃れアメリカに移住します。
その後カリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校で写真のBFA学位、ニューヨークのスクールオブビジュアルアーツでMFAの学位を取得した彼は、再びベトナムに戻り、現在ベトナムのホーチミンを中心にアートワークを展開しています。
彼が幼少の頃体験した戦争や、現在のベトナムにおけるアートシーンについて語ってくれました。

幼少の頃身近に見た戦争

カンボジアとの国境に近いベトナムの町ハティエンで生まれたディン・クァン・レーが戦争を体験したのは、彼が10歳の頃に本格化したカンボジア・ベトナム戦争でした。カンボジア国境に近いため、衝突も激しく、毎日のように人々が銃殺される殺戮の現場を目の当たりにしたそうです。
そして彼は戦火を逃れ、家族とともにロサンゼルスに移住することになります。

アメリカの大学でアートを学びながら、彼はかつて体験した戦争について調べ、子供だった自分が感じた戦争についての「なぜ?」という疑問について向き合っていくことになります。
目の前で起こっていた殺戮は、まだ幼かった彼の中で混沌としており、その意味を理解していったのは、平和なアメリカにおける学生生活の中においてでした。

アメリカから再びベトナムへ

長らく過ごしたアメリカですが、ディン・クァン・レーの中では欧米文化に溶け込もうとしたシミュレーションのような感覚があったと振り返ります。アメリカに馴染もうとする程しっくりこない部分は、文化的背景というよりは根源的に求めているものであったのかもしれません。
そんな彼が祖国に戻るきっかけとなったベトナム滞在は1993年のことで、ベトナムに住む人々の屈託のない若さに満ちたパワーに触れ、そしてアートワークにおいて最も重要な意味を持つベトナムの戦争の歴史について人々から直に話を聞くことができる価値を見出しました。
そのようなことから1997年よりディン・クァン・レーは本格的に活動の拠点をベトナムのホーチミンへと移しました。

戦争の記憶とアートワーク

ディン・クァン・レーは戦争を作品で取り上げていきます。その過程でより深く当時のことを知ることができたのは、戦争体験者へのインタビューでした。当時のトラウマなどを直接聞くことで、自身の記憶とリンクし、リアリティのあるアート作品制作へと反映されました。

現在のベトナムのアートシーンについて

ベトナムでコンテンポラリーアートが発表されるようになったのは、1990年代からで、それ以前のアートはソーシャルリアリズムであり、写実的な絵画がほとんどでした。
90年代にコンテンポラリーアートが広まるきっかけとなったのは、フランスやドイツなどの大使館が学びの場として開放されたことです。ここで伝統的な工芸や写実絵画などしか知らなかった若者たちが現代美術を育む場となり、そして近年に至るグローバル化から欧米で学んだ若手のアーティストたちが増えていきました。
現在ディン・クァン・レーは、彼のホーチミンにおける拠点であるサンアートギャラリーで、自らの作品発表以外にも、若手アーティストの育成やキュレーションに力を注いでいます。
彼の育成方法でアートスクールと違うのは、作品についてディスカッションする時間を設けることです。学校ではアートワークに対する評価のみであり、作品についての詳しい分析や振り返りをディスカッションすることは、若手アーティストの作品制作に非常に効果を発揮しています。

今後の活動について

現在ディン・クァン・レーは、パリの展覧会や、バンコクビエンナーレの準備を進めています。
そしてホーチミンでは、サンアートギャラリーにおいて、ホームレス、格差社会、政治など社会問題を取り上げたプロパガンダのポスターアート展を計画しています。
本来思想を誘導する意図を持ったプロパガンダポスターで問題提起を行うというアイロニカルな試みは、非常に興味深くユニークな展覧会となりそうです。

ヘリコプターに魅せられたベトナム人と戦争の関係について取り上げた作品で、この作品によって彼の名が世界的に知られることになりました。

  • Erasure (2011)

クメール・ルージュから逃れた難民、亡命する人を乗せた船の沈没を想起させる作品。
