“Kabugwas” is a Bisayan word meaning a “star” used as a landmark to determine the direction of navigation, taught by a free-diving fisher on the island where the artist stayed in Surigao del Sur, the Philippines. This work was shot in Mindanao/Surigao (Philippines), Jeju Island, Okinoshima (Fukuoka), and Tsushima using diving techniques the artist learned at the Haenyeo School on Jeju Island.
It is an audio visual reimagination of the moments when stories: cosmology, mythology, memory, and history are spun by humanity out of being immersed in the fluid nature of the world and the circulation of energy, imagined through the artist’s real experience.
