G13 Gallery is proud to present AMBIVALENCE, a solo exhibition by our local contemporary artist, Khairudin Zainudin. In this latest solo exhibition, Khairudin presents to us a number of artworks demonstrating his drawing adeptness, depicting the local activities in Kelantan, the state where he was born. Based in KL, he had travelled back-and-forth to Kelantan between 2016 and 2020, and the visits had made him aware and conscious of the drastic changes in Kelantan throughout the years, which have inspired him to enthusiastically portray what is happening there.

AMBIVALENCE also conveys Khairudin’s feeling of frustration towards his own life process as he thinks he has been taking for granted the cultural experience in his life. Raised in a devoutly religious family, he has ignored and has been unaware of the cultural activities and events that were happening around him; hence, he has impassively brushed aside the cultural margin of Kelantan such as traditional plays, games, performance, etc. It is only when he becomes an adult and started to delve into the arts, he started to pay attention to and appreciate Kelantan cultural heritage and began to explore and experience the elements – sort of ‘making amends’ for his obliviousness during his childhood. Having the mixed emotions that he feels about his upbringings, he turns the emotional baggage into his unique interpretations and creates depictions of his subjects in a variety of presentation using various mediums, such as ink, oil pastel, pencil colour, and acrylic.
