2020年5月25日、ミネアポリスでジョージ・フロイド氏が白人警官の手によって殺害されたことをきっかけに、「Black Lives Matter」の旗のもと、人種差別や警察による横暴に反対する抗議活動が世界60カ国以上で展開された。
イギリス人アーティストのジャスティン・ミルズは、白人警察官の膝がジョージ・フロイドを窒息させたストリートから遠く離れたバンコクに住んでいるが、同じ人間として、また良心を持ち、正義と平等を切望する白人として、もはや黙って見過ごすことはできないと感じていた。
「You don't have to be black to be outraged / 黒人でなくとも憤慨することとは？」は、アメリカの反人種主義映画4作品、Do the Right Thing ( Spike Lee 監督, 1989年)、 Selma ( Ava DuVernay 監督, 2014年)、 Moonlight ( Barry Jenkins 監督, 2016年)、I Am Not Your Negro ( Raoul Peck 監督, 2016年)から、重要な場面を英語字幕とともに撮影し、モノクロにしたフォトモンタージュ作品である。  
ミルズがモノクロを選択したのは、色の問題を反映しているだけでなく、画像を2つに分け、片方に通常のポジティブプリント、もう片方にネガティブプリントを配置することで、それぞれの相反する性質を強調し、他方があるからこそそれぞれが存在するという事実を強調している。黒のない白はなく、その逆もまた然りである。これが写真の科学的事実であり、現実の世界の科学的事実であるのだ。

アーティストについて

ジャスティン・ミルズ / Justin Mills（イギリス、ウィルトシャー州ソールズベリー 1964年生まれ）は、1994年にインドで美術の修士号を取得し、1996年からタイに在住している。長らく絵画を主に制作してきたが、写真もまた彼の表現手段のひとつとなっている。
